Atmakaraka Planet
Atmakaraka has two Word- Atma (Soul) and Karaka (Significator). So the planet which Signify our Soul or Atma is known as Atmakaraka planet. In Vedic Asctrology the planet which has highest Degree in our Horoscope is called Atmakaraka planet and Except Ketu all other 8 planets can become Atmakaraka. It actually shows the goal or the purpose of the soul for which it has taken this birth and Lessons our Soul needs to Learn in this Life.
As per Hindu Philosophy, Puran, Bhagwad Gita, Humans are triad of Physical body, Manas or Mind and Atma or Soul. Physical Body is Indicated by Lagna , Mind is indicated by Moon and Soul is indicated by Atmakaraka planet. Our Body needs Soul in order to get the energy to breath the Pran Vayu into the body created by prakriti. When the Soul leaves the body, it can not breath the pran vayu and our physical existence comes to an end.
Atma or Soul is manifested from Shiva or paramaatma or eternal Soul. The main purpose of the Atma or the soul is to meet with the parmatma or god and to become free from the cycle of birth and rebirth. This is called Moksha. But due to different Karmic Bondages, we can not become free. Atmakaraka Planet can make us free from all these Bondages and is actually giver of Moksha. 12th house of Atmakaraka Planet is actually the House of Moksha. In the Rasi chart the 12th house from Lagna is the end of our Physical existence and 12th house from Atmakaraka is the end of the Soul existence or Moksha. So it is also called Jivanmuktamsa.
Though both Maharshi Parasar and Rishi jaimini talked about Atmakaraka Planet but Sage Jaimini discussed about it much more deeply. So the concept of Atmakaraka sometimes considered as part of Jaimini astrology.
How to find your Atmakaraka Planet
Finding your Atmakaraka planet is straightforward:
- Open your Horoscope (Janam Kundli)
- Note the degrees of all planets within their signs (ignore the sign, only look at degrees 0–30)
- The planet with the highest degree is your Atmakaraka planet
- For example, if Venus is at 28°, Mars at 22°, Saturn at 25° — Venus is your Atmakaraka
- In case of Rahu, we have to deduct the degree travelled by Rahu from 30 degree because the motion of Rahu is always retrograde.
You can calculate this using any Vedic astrology software like Jagannatha Hora (free) or online tools. Simply look for “AK” marked next to a planet in your chart.
So It is very easy to identify the Atmakaraka Planet. Irrespective of Sign, the planet which travels the highest Longitude in a Horoscope becomes the AK.
The higher the degree of your AK planet, the heavier the karmic lessons your soul needs to resolve in this lifetime. Think of it like a school exam- A higher degree (like 28°–29°) means you have a tougher paper to solve this lifetime whereas A lower degree means the lessons are a little lighter.
Importance of Atmakaraka Planet
Atmakaraka planet is like the king of the horoscope. As everyone follows the order of the King, similarly every other planet give result as per the wish of the Atmakaraka planet. If the atmakaraka is inauspicious or weak, the other karakas are unable to give auspicious results. No planet can give result whether good or bad beyond what AK wants.
But here’s the twist — being important doesn’t mean being easy!

Atmakaraka Planet can make our Soul free from the cycle of birth and rebirth. The Devata or Deity which can make our Soul free from the cycle of birth and death or can give us Moksha is known as Ishta Devata. The 12th house from AK in Navamsa shows the Ishta Devata of the native. The 12th house is called “jivanmuktamsa”. This is the house signifying the emancipation of the soul and we have to examine this house to know about ishta devata.
