Figurine of Jagannatha Deva is different from the idol in the ordinary temple. Why Lord Jagannath does not have a complete hand and legs? This is one of the miracle stories of Lord Jagannath. According to the story, King of Puri was a great devotee of Lord Krishna. One night Lord Krishna came in his dream and asked King Indradumnya to build a statue with a piece of wood that came to floated in the Puri Sea shore. Then, to build the statue, the king was looking for a suitable woodcutter. Then he found a mysterious old Brahmin artist and gave him the responsibility of making statues. This Brahmin was none other than Viswakarma in disguise.

But the artist gave a condition to the king before taking up the task. According to that condition, nobody should stop or intervene in his work while making the statue and no question can be asked about the progress of the work. That is why he started off the door and began to build the statue. Meanwhile, everyone, along with the king and queen, was very interested in construction and eager to know the progress. Every day they used to go to the door and hear the sound of wood in the woods. But after 6-7 days, the noise stopped when the king stood outside. The thrilling King could not control the curiosity and opened the door.

Then the statue was still unfinished and the woodworker could not be found. In fact, that mysterious woodcutter was the Vishwakarma itself. The king became frustrated because the hand piece was not built. Alongside, there was a remorse for work blocking. At that time Devarshi Narada appeared before him and comforted the king, saying that this half-image was an accepted form of God and it was the wish of Lord himself to take Puja in this form.

Since then Jugnnath Puja was started by establishing life in this form.
